Regarding that Daily Mail article, I`ve just posted this comment, we`ll see if it gets published...

"Mike Stock is a complete hypocrite, what about those early "Kylie" videos which he co-wrote the songs to? I seem to recall her prancing around in some fairly evocative clothing, he didn`t seem to object to sexy dance videos when the royalties from them were lining his pockets!"

Re "Sweeney Todd with Balls".

I`ve seen an advanced screener copy of "Meat Grinder", and whilst it is indeed quite bloody in places, and features a few yucky "ouch" moments, its nothing that hasn`t been seen before.

Hostel and some of the Saw films are notably gorier!

Is Keith Vaz still an MP then?

Thought with all the scandals this guy caused when labour where in office, he`d stepped down.

How is he still in a job exactly?

The feminists should do more research, if Linda Lovelace was abused in that film, then why did she return to do a sequel?

Look up "Deep Throat 2", it exists!

@ emark

You mean he`s changed his plea from guilty, back to not guilty?

Seems he was given some dodgy advise by his defense team, but now Backlash is on the case theyve given him a specialist lawyer and hes switched back to his original plea.

Good on him, just hope hes succesful as you always get a harsher sentence if found guilty, as opposed to pleading guilty.

Am I allowed to be excited about the scrapping of this ill thought out scheme?

Does this mean that the other parties were indeed listening to people`s concerns when labour were forcing these things through as they thought they knew best?

I Spit on Your Grave has been resubmitted uncut to the BBFC, no decision has been reached yet though.

I`m betting it will fare better than previous releases, but will not escape the censors scissors.

Gordon Brown Resigns

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20100511/tuk-gordon-brown-announces-resignation-6323e80.html

And don;t you just love this quote...

Mr Brown said he had "loved the job, not for its prestige, its titles and its ceremony, which I do not love at all." "No, I loved the job for its potential to make this country I love fairer, more tolerant, more green, more democratic, more prosperous, more just - truly a greater Britain," he said.

Fairer, more tolerant, democratic and Just????

What fucking country is he talking about, it sure as hell isn`t the UK?

Worlds first thought crime on the books, overbearing police powers, oppressive anti-terror laws, right to protest stiffled, free speech only as long as it doesnt offend anyone else, increased surveilance, ID cards, they`ve turned this place into a virtual police state!

Maybe he was talking about Scotland?

Regarding Comedy Central self censoring themselves with that South park episode, the story has taken an interesting twist on YouTube.

Noted athiest Thunderf00t published a video on his channel showing images of the offending scenes with Mohammed the Teddy Bear and clips of Mohammed appearing in and earlier episode and saying they SHOULD show the the new epsiode as it was imperitive for people not to be intimidated by threats and to stand up for freedom of speech.

But within 24 hours, the video was pulled by YouTube after Viacom issued a copyright take down notice.

Anyway, the video was subsequently mirrored by other YouTube users, as can be seen here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhCjv9EcLpw

Viacom have since backed down and said they`ll take no further action over the vid, which is why the mirrors are still up.

Thunderf00t has also since published another video critisisng them for their actions... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OWaZVMBw1E

Clearly Viacom have no sense of Irony censoring a video urging them to stand up for freedom of speech, but there you go.

OK, with the election coming up, I`ve been musing over the events of the last decade or so since labour came to power.

Whilst they have introduced some extremely restrictive new laws that most would consider draconian, looking at events in other countries I can;t help but wonder if this isn`t just part of a much larger trend.

Holland, once considered one of the most liberal countries in Europe, is slowly shutting down its notorious cafes and seems to be scaling down its red light district to the point where they`re virtually non-existant. They also seem to be hell bent in suppressing people with politcally incorrect views, like Gert Wilders.

You have countries like Australia making possession of mere pornography illegal in certain states, which can be freely purchased quite legally in other parts of the country, Ireland introducing blasphemy laws, various European countries criminalising `paying for sex`, others trying to ban violent video games, and then there are countries trying to jail people for merely possesing sexually explicit cartoons, just because the characters in them look a bit young.

Its like everytime the UK tries to ban or curtail something, I try to argue that the UK is being overly zealous and out of step with the rest of the world, only to find simlar laws are being enacted elsewhere.

So, whats the future then? Will things ever get better, or will they get worse do you think? Are the pro-censorship/politically correct lot winning the battle?

I think whoever gets in come may 6th we`re in for "interesting" times.

Dave,

Thanks for that. I wasn`t sure if Sky digital equipment was capable of receiving anything other than the UK specific channels which sky allowed on their EPG.

I remember the old analogue systems picked up anything being broadcast on the Astra satelites (which thanks to those German channels is how I got my copy of The Exorcist on video way before the BBFC passed it).

However, since going digital all those German channels dissapeared.

Can you pick up other channels not listed on SKYs EPG then?

Quick update over the Alan Tithmarsh debate.

I believe the "research" Julie Peasgood reffered to was THIS study by American Psychologist Craig A Anderson of Iowa State University, which appeared in the March issue of the American Psychological Associations bulletin. The extract can be viewed here.

http://www.psychology.iastate.edu/faculty/caa/abstracts/2010-2014/10ASISBSRS.pdf

However, his findings, not to mention methods of compiling data, have come in for heavy critism from others. Not least, Christopher Ferguson and John Kilburn of the department of behavioral applied science and criminal justice at Texas A&M International University.

The Washington Post gives details here...
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/checkup/2010/03/study_shows_violent_video_game.html?wpisrc=nl_tech

Another thing, if you do some digging, it seems that Craig Anderson clearly has some sort of axe to grind against violent media. Most of his research seems to be dedicated to proving links between violent media and behaviour.

Regarding the comments about Alan Titchmarsh`s audience, I agree. I think the problem was they`re generally "more mature" than the audience you`d find for one of, say, Graham Norton`s or Johnathon Ross`s shows.

The most complex thing the "Titchmarsh" lot had to play with when they were young was probably a hoop and a stick!

It did seem like a retread of the old "video nasties" moral panic of the early 80s with similar arguments being used.

Bit late, but did anyone catch last Friday`s "Alan Titchmarsh Show"?

They had a breif discussion about violent video games which featured some chap who`s editor of a popular gaming mag, also present were actress Julie Peasgood and Kelvin Mackenzie, former editor of The Sun.

The chap seemed to be fighting his corner quite well until Julie Peasgood opened her mouth saying that many of these games "promoted, violence, racism and sexism", which got a huge round of applause from the audience. This statement was allowed to go unchallenged, which was a shame as I would have liked to have heard what games she`d played that promoted these things.

But anyway, she then went on to say that "A recent study in the US found a direct link between children`s behaviour and the violent video games they play".

The chap countered that argument by saying that the UK Governments own research by Tanya Byron found no evidence that was true, which resulted in a few jeers from the audience. Which I found quite disturbing considering the audience would accept an emotive unsubstantiated claim, whilst pouring scorn on a stated fact.

Kelvin Mackenzie then chimed in about James Bulger`s killers being corrupted by violent media, which really made me seethe considering that story was a press fabrication by the very paper he used to work for.

Again, the guy who worked for the PC mag made some good points, but he obviously wasn`t a seasoned debater. He seemed to be playing "defence" most of the time, when he would have been better going on the attack and forcing the other 2 to try and substantiate their claims, which would have crumbled under the slightest scrutiny.

Anyway, if you want to see it for yourself, someone`s posted it on YouTube...

Yeah I know, wasn;t having a go, just a little surprised you would say there were similarities between this and that film, when I`ve always maintained it would take an exceptionally long stretch of the imagination to see anything remotely similar.

Difficult to comment without seeing what he actually put, however there is a line between airing an offensive opinion and actively stirring up trouble.

Just look at the likes of Abu Hamza, or those cartoon protesters waving banners saying "kill the infidels" and "behead those that insult islam". Saying you don;t like something or someone is one thing, but trying to incite hatred/murder is another.

If he just wanted to post videos about why he didn;t like people of other races that would be one thing, but if he was posting videos actively encouraging hatred or discrimination, then that`s a bit differant.

Again though, I would really need to see what had actualy been put on his site before I could comment further.

Yeah, when you start looking into the whole phenomena of the nasties, you find that most of the titles on the list were only included basically because of their lurid title or box artwork or because the press (who are never ones to be relied upon) had written a few nasty things about it.

I mean, SS Experiment Camp? What a sack of $hite, how could anyone take a film seriously that has the line "You Bastard, what have you done with my balls?" in it? They should have called that one "Carry on up the Kaiser"! The fact that it`s now available uncut and society hasn`t crumbled as a result is testament to how wrong they got it.

This is what happens when you don`t view things for yourself and rely upon hearsay.

Just looking at Dave`s Video Nasty list, I`m sure there`s an error on there.

Whilst the Mario Bava film Bloodbath (AKA Bay of Blood/Twitch of Death Nerve) was indeed on the list, the Joel M Reed film of the same name (AKA Blood Sucking Freaks) was not (so far as I can tell from all other reference material any way).

Whilst it is entirely possible that videos might have been confiscated in error, that doesn`t amount to inclusion on the list. Much like "Last House on Dead End Street", which also had a release as "The Funhouse", and was often confused with the Tobe Hooper film, but wasn`t actually included.

Re: Ebay censors

I`ve had similar run-ins with Ebay myself, it seems they have a very strict policy against "strong adult content" which goes beyond pornography, however no one who works for them seems to know why this is.

I had a listing for "I Spit on Your Grave" pulled, I duly complained stating that it was a legimate release, not a bootleg, and that it was the toned down UK version which had been censored and rated 18 by the BBFC and was freely available from Amazon and ordinry high street stores like HMV and even WHSmiths and Woolworths (they were still going at the time).

They responded that the UK release still fell foul of their policies on strong adult material and the fact that it was available elsewhere made no difference to whether they were going to allow it.

I asked why they felt the need to prohibit this material, they said because they regarded it as being unsuitable to be sold by them. I pressed them as to why they regarded it as unsuitable, they said because their legal team had a list of films they considered in breach of this policy. So I asked why they felt the need to have such a policy, they said because they consider certain films unsuitable and round and round the answers went (in a scene rather reminiscent of a Monty Python sketch)until they eventually stopped replying to me.

It was just one circular reason after another, you couldn`t pin them down as to why, so I could only conclude that they didn;t know and the decision was down to someone higher up.

It does seem, judging by their arbitrary decision making, that the people who make up these lists of films to block don`t really know which ones do and dont breach their policies as they are blissfully unawhere of the many films with similar content that continue to be happily traded, until someone tips them off about it (I bought and sold numerous differant uncut VHS and DVD versions of I Spit on Your Grave back when Ebay were still relatively new on the scene).

Also, they have been known to pull auctions solely based on a films title. A collegue of mine listed some films that had been released by the company "X-rated" (theyre a German/Austrian cult movie label). Of course Ebay saw the words X rated in the description and duly pulled rthe lot thinking X rated reffered to the content, as opposed to the name of the distributors.

I`ve said this before but back in the early days, Ebay were quite liberal with the sort of stuff you could sell on their site, as long as it wasn`t porn. Now that they`ve cornered the market and wiped out the competition, they seem to be trying to impose their moral views on what can and cant pass through their site, which is probably why, according to the news this morning, more and more people are defecting to Amazon marketplace.

RE: Atheists legally banned from office in 7 US states

This one has been doing the rounds for a while. Whilst 7 states do have legislation that technically prohibits athiests from taking office, the US constitution implicitly states that "No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States", which under the "supremacy clause" means that if theres a conflict between a state law and the US constitution, the US constitution wins.

Darkside Magazine ceased publication roundabout September time, the message given to subscribers was something along the lines of "due to the current financial climate the magazine has been forced to cease publication until, they hope, sometime in the new year, when a relaunch is planned in a `brand new` format"

Whether the magazine materialises again is another matter. Many people have commented that the quality of the articles had been in decline for some time and its editor, Alan Bryce, was reportedly losing interest in keeping it going and was more interested in newer ventures.

Whether those last points are true or not I cant be certain, but don;t hold your breath regarding the mags re-materialisation.

Anyone heard about this news currently pinging its way round the blogosphere?

http://www.boingboing.net/2009/11/19/breaking-leaked-uk-g.html

If this is correct, Peter Mandelson is looking at introducing some amendments to the to the Digital Economy Bill now under debate in Parliament. These changes will give the Secretary of State (Mandelson -- or his successor in the next government) the power to make "secondary legislation" (legislation that is passed without debate) to amend the provisions of Copyright, Designs and Patents Act (1988).

What that means is that an unelected official would have the power to do anything without Parliamentary oversight or debate, provided it was done in the name of protecting copyright.

So, anyone else heard about this?

Visited my Local HMV the other day and they seemed to be stocking both the censored and uncensored versions of the Lesbian Vampire Killers sleeve.

The Uncensored version is just in a standard DVD amaray case, whereas the censored DVD has a cardboard slipcase over it (you would have thought they could have left the uncensored artwork on the case artwork if they were going to censor the cardboard sleeve, but alas no)!

It could be just down to the distributors, HMV probably were replacing their stocks following Halloween and have been sent the censored artwork as its all the distributors had in stock.

How on Earth can Brazier call for councils to ban a film which he hasn;t even seen? It`s not even out till the end of the month, so how does he know how violent it is?

It`s blatantly obvious he never watches any of the films he lobbies against as he continues to bang on about how "ultra violent" Eastern Promises was, despite the fact the film essentially was just 2 hours of people stood around talking. The so called eye gouging is more implied than shown and 2 brief scenes of people having their throat cut does not a violent movie make.

Is it really that much differant to that advert where the people at that train station in London suddenly start dancing?

Interesting review of the film "Lord save us from your Followers" at my favourite conservative christian website "Movieguide"...

http://www.movieguide.org/box-office/6/9988/lord-save-us-from-your-followers

Seems the film is a documentary from a liberal minded christian which critises the religious right for their bigotry and intollerance.

The reviewers, with no sense of irony, basically prove everything he`s said with their critisisms of his liberal stance.

Just been watching Lady Gaga`s performance at the MTV awards on Youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVi8iXUYXkc (if this link gets taken down, just hunt around i`m sure other people will post more videos)

The blood starts around the 2m35s mark after she gets off the piano.

Can`t say as I see what all the fuss was about, most people in the audience just seemed to be thinking "WTF????".

I`m not even sure what it was meant to be all about to be honest, but the whole performance was wierd. At tne point she was using crutches and dancing round someone in a wheelchair, at another point she was pretending to play the piano, then at the end she gets hoisted up on a rope. But in any case, it didn;t make me want to go commit suicide.

Dano, if I remember rightly the police went on record as saying "they looked into all the films the children had in their homes and the list of films they had rented and found nothing that could have influenced this crime. If you wanted to blame any film it might as well be the railway children". That was a quote from one of the investigating officers in the Bulger case, I forget which one but it was either Detective Ray Simpson or Cheif Superintendant Albert Kirby (one of the two).

The false connection between their actions and violent videos came about after one of the newspapers (it was either the sun or the mirror) looked into the families rental lists and found "Childs Play 3" on there. However, this had been rented by the biological father of one of the two boys who was actually divorced from the mother and didn;t live at home, and so neither child had actually seen it.

They were products of broken homes and abusive parents, but there was so much mud slinging done by the press about how it MUST have been that Child`s Play film that its gone on to become somethign of a legend. All I can say is they obviously have never seen the film as there was nothing in it I could see that could have influenced their actions.

Interesting debate on "The Big Questions" this morning.

One of the debates focussed on "is there too much sex on TV" and one of the people from the Media March was on there (think it was Pippa Smith).

There was her and some other woman (I forget her name) who were trundling out the usual bollox about how back in (whenever) before pornography there was hardly any reported sex crimes, but since pornography the rates of sex crime have gone sky high.

There was the usual "opinion" and anecdotal bullshit trotted out as fact, as well as that age old myth about James Bulgers killers being influenced by violent films to illustrate the point about how people are affected by what they see.

All this seemed to go virtually unchallenged, although other people pointed out that it wasn;t sex on TV that was the problem, but lack of proper sex education and pointed to how Holland has such a low rate of teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases (just a pity no one also pointed out they also have the most liberal porn laws).

However they shot themselves in the foot when they said somethign along the lines of showing (or educating about, I forget now) homosexuality to children was a bad thing, some Liberal-Democrat MP pointed out that anecdotal evience didnt make it a fact and someone else pointed out that it was allright saying that back in the sexually repressed days before pornography there were fewer reported sex crimes, that didn;t mean they didnt take place. Just they werent reported.

Anyway, it should be on the BBCs Iplayer shortly and available until the end of the week.

Whilst the pro-censorship lot did themselves no favours, it would have been nice to see a lot more of their straw arguments challenged from the word go.

YouTubes arbitrary censors have been busy again.

This time they struck down a video by user lampyman101, http://www.youtube.com/user/lampyman101 who had posted a review of the old video nasty "Island of Death"

Kind of odd as there was no real nudity on it, it didn;t use any clips, just screen caps (so no real problem with copyright infringement) and overall was fairly inncouous. However, they said it violated their T&C on "offensive material" and so was removed.

The only thing that might have possibly got some people riled that anyone can think of was possibly his commentary on the religious connotations of the film, in particular a comparison between a picture of the lead protagonist holding a goat and a picture of Jesus holding a lamb.

Of course, they don`t tell you exactly what was wrong and there`s no way of contacting them to discuss the matter, so there`s no way of knowing what exactly what the problem was with it.

Anyway, he posted a breif rant about it here.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVu569-VlzU

Recently bought the Psycho 1-4 collection box set.

Just looking at Psycho 2, I`m sure there`s a slight cut to this version.

Call me an old perv, but during the scene where someone (presumably Norman) is spying on Meg Tilly in the shower, I seem to recall as she pulls back the shower curtain to step out, you got a breif flash of her naked body before the camera cuts back to a shot of someones eye peeking at her through the hole in the wall.

However, in this version it cuts back just as she starts to pull the curtain back, so you don`t get to see the the breif full frontal of her.

I`m sure I`m not imagining this, I`ll have to see if I can dig out the old VHS copy my friend has in his collection.

@Lysander

Happy to oblige, incidentally what I meant to say was that pornography cannot be legally mail ordered WITHIN the UK, you can import it as long as the content don`t break UK laws.

With any film, if customs examine it and feel it is in breach of UK obscenity laws they will confiscate it. Though that very rarely happens these days, what with the liberal attitudes of the BBFC and the fact few people believe general films are liable to "deprave or corrupt" anybody. Plus there`s so much importing that goes on, customs can`t be bothered to check most movies from online suppliers.

Of course, there`s no law preventing ownership of material in breach of current obscenity laws, so there`s nothing they can do about my imported version of Cannibal Ferox.

The only exception to this is the new-fangled "dangerous pictures act" which now makes it an offence to possess violent pornography, but thats a whole differant kettle of fish!

@Lysander

Hi there.

First of all, contrary to what is on the BBFC website, it is not strictly true that the content of unclassified films should be in line with BBFC guidlines in order to be imported legally.

It is truer to say that as long as the content of the film you wish to import doesn`t break any UK laws then you can legally import it. The BBFC, in many cases, are a bit stricter on what the law would allow. There is no law that specifically says the content has to be in line with BBFC policy.

Second point.

Yes, if a film has not been classified then it is illegal to be sold in the UK. So if you have a shop that is selling imported DVDs near you (even if they`re just the american/European versions of the same film thats availabl to buy here) then they`re breaking the law.

I know this as back in the bad old days during the Ferman era at the board and the UK was the most heavily censored country in Europe, I was forever going to these video fairs which were selling uncut imports and they were often getting raided by the cops for this very reason.

Technically, if you import a DVD then later get bored of it and decide to flog it on Ebay, that`s breaking the law as you are distributing unclassified material. HOWEVER, they tend to turn a blind eye to collectors getting rid of their surplus collections. In fact since the advent of mail order and lax BBFC guidelines they don;t tend to bother Ebay sellers at all.

The only material they do still seem to target these days is pornography as that cant be legally mail ordered in the UK.

Re: Cut and Run

Nice to see my little summary I wrote on the IMDB about the 2 differant versions of "Cut and Run" appearing on the Melonfarmers (though I should have put R-rating, not R-certificate. My bad!)

May I also add that the US Anchor Bay DVD contains the additional extra gory scenes in Italian language only (so the dialogue keeps switchign between Itlaian and English) as they claim the extra gory "hard" version was never dubbed into English.

This is not the case as the Hong Kong video was of the uncut version and entirely in English. Also, theres a couple of scenes in the Anchor Bay DVD in Italian that were actually dubbed into English on the "soft" version, so there`s no reason for these to be in Itlalian at all.

Re : Dangerous Texts

Is this a joke? First they ban pictures, then they ban cartoons, NOW they try and ban words?

What`s next, thoughts??????

I notice they`re re-writing the definition of what constitutes "obscene" in these new laws. Instead of being liable to "deprave or corrupt" it is now material that is of a "disgusting character".

That`s it then, we`re well and truly on the slippery slope where anything that upsets our learnid peers will result in you being carted off to the gulags.

Does this law actually stand any chance of getting through do you think?

Movieguide recommends "Land of the Lost". See www.movieguide.org

LAND OF THE LOST is a very vulgar remake of what was a children’s TV show, about a foul-mouthed, pompous scientist, his new assistant and a redneck survivalist, who accidentally get trapped in another dimension with dinosaurs, a caveman alien and a group of nasty, but slow-moving lizard men up to no good. Despite some very funny clean moments, LAND OF THE LOST is a rambling, abhorrent exercise in offensive, sexual, scatological, stoner jokes.

That`s it then, I`m sold. When this come out on DVD here?

:D

Other noteworthy reviews, they disliked the Jack Black comedy "Year One" because of its `revisionist history` of the book of genesis. Overall they liked Terminator 4 though (surprisingly) because of its religious undertones about good vs evil, redemption and self sacrifice. But were dissapointed there were no direct references to god. ???????

I often wonder if the I actually watch the same films they do?

This guy very nearly ended up on the sex offenders register for nothing more than photos that were in bad taste.

Now I must admit, I`m not sure WHY anyone would want to look at "animal" stuff, but its funny he is going to have to go for counselling (or whatever it was) to show him how his behaviour is "wrong", when people in Europe look at this stuff all the time with total impunity.

Mountain of the Cannibal God

Actually "Slave of the Cannibal God" has been shown several times on that channel over the last year or so.

The print they show is indeed mostly uncut. It`s of the theatrical version, so it misses out the "orgy" scene that was included in the extended versions released by Anchor Bay and Blue Underground.

However, all the scenes cut by the BBFC are intact, including the animal violence. Though it misses out the castration scene.

It appears to be the same slightly cut print that grey
market label "Diamond DVD" were releasing in the US a few years ago.

Not sure how many of you are framiliar with the website movieguide.org, which is run by a bunch of conservative christians, but I just HAD to share their review of the film "Drag Me to Hell"...

Very strong occult worldview where a demon and a demonic curse win victory and heroine consults misguided, ultimately wicked and incompetent psychics and spiritualist mediums instead of relying on the power of Jesus Christ and the insights of the Bible, plus curse in movie implies that gypsies have power to curse people into Hell even though it is our sins that condemn us to Hell, so this is a strong example of a false religious (FRFR) notion that is not theologically or biblically true.

Regarding that court case and the film "severence", were they actually trying to implicate the film in the crime, or merely trying to show where the defendant got the idea from?

As the line in "Scream" goes "movies don;t make people into killers, they make killers more creative".

I can`t see too much coming from this to be honest, the government seem to have moved on from blaming films for societies ills (given the pasting Julian Brazier received in parlaiment last time he tried anyway).

These days its all computer games and internet porn.

*Edit - a quick addendum. similar scenes can be seen in old films such as former video nasty "Dead & Buried", "Hills Have eyes" (old and new version) and more recently in "Eden Lake". Yet I don`t see these being re-enacted anywhere.

No. We, as an organisation, hold no view on whether the law is right or just, but do believe that the law should be enforced. Some of us may hold an opinion on the justness of the law; they need not be in agreement with each other.

Seems YouTube are now censoring music vids by removing the audio if they think there`s been a breach of copyright.

All well and good but they`ve even been censoring things like top ten countdowns from old episodes of The Chart Show just because it showed 3s of a particular music video (in this case, the user had already removed all the full length music videos from the countdown as it had been taken down once before following objections)

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=O2RpAsYnJBI

One person compiled a video to look like the intro to US show "Cops" but using clips taken from UK police shows. But because it used the original theme music from Inner Circle, they censored the audio for alleged copyright infringement.

Yet, the original music video, the original intro and other homages continue to pop-up elsewhere on their site.

There`s a bit more to the atheist sign furore.

The fuss started after Fox News host Bill O`Reilly started complaining that the sign was offensive to christians and posting the governers phone number during his show so people could complain.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xADKtEHjixI

The governer did later say in response that whilst she did not agree with their statement, she agreed they had they right to express themselves and if they were going to allow a nativity scene displaying a christmas message, she saw no right to censor an athiest message.

But it didn`t end with the atheists sign getting trashed, after the sign was replaced all these other fringe groups started applying for permission to put up Xmas messages, some pro-christian, some pro-atheist and some anti-atheist. But THEN things started getting really silly, one group got permission to put up a festivas pole, the church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster got permission to put up a festive message then the final straw came when The Westboro Baptist Church (you know, the God Hates Fags bunch) asked permission to put up a sign saying "Santa Claus is going to send you to Hell", at which point the governers office said they would not be accepting any more requests until they had reviewed their policy on allowing groups to display signs and messages.

The Atheist Experience, a public access show that goes out in Austin Texas, did a very good slot on this which can be seen on YouTube.

Glancing at the guidelines for the "dangerous pictures act" I think we may have found our "get out of jail free" card.

"a reasonable person looking at the image would think that the people and animals portrayed were real."

If the stuff is as badly staged as the material on the preview page to the "necrobabes" website we`ll have little to worry about.

However, that would not stop the inconvenience of having an overzealous cheif constable, who takes umbridge to such images, using it to raid a persons home and haul them in for questioning.

Bit of belated Halloween news for you all, seems Jack Straw is being petitioned to give a posthumous pardon to all those wrongly convicted of witch craft during the 1700`s...

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20081031/tuk-pardon-plea-for-executed-witches-45dbed5.html

Oh the irony, a government hell bent on starting modern day witch hunts would consider pardoning those already convicted.

How many hundreds of years will it be till all those innocent sods that are going to be convicted under the OPA are going to be post humously pardoned I wonder?
